Italian Tall Ship to visit Limassol
THE ITALIAN navy training ship "Amerigo Vespucci" will dock in Limassol on Friday for four days during which it will be open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday .
A statement from the Italian embassy said the Amerigo Vespucci, named after the 15th century famous explorer, is considered one of the finest ships in the world. The call at Limassol is part of this year's training programme by the Italian Naval Academy and also includes visit to Malta and Israel and other countries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
"The decision to include Cyprus among the destination countries underlines once again our friendship towards the people of Cyprus. The port of call in Limassol will give an opportunity for residents of Cyprus and tourists to admire a ship of incomparable beauty," the statement said.
The Tall Ship's captain will be meeting with local political and military authorities during the visit.
The Amerigo Vespucci has 26 sails and can reach a speed of 12 knots and often takes part in Tall Ship races. The vessel usually carries around 450 people during training voyages.
