As more and more homes take out pay TV packages, we look at what is available

GONE ARE the days where zapping through the television programmes consisted of flicking through just a few boring television channels with nothing much on.

We have entered the age of satellite TV, where we have a plethora of special offers and television channel packages to chose from. No longer can we claim to being bored at home, complaining of the lack of entertainment.

Less than two decades ago you would have been better off dusting the furniture, than watching television. There were no options: you either watched the semi government channel CyBC for a few hours in the evening or you went to bed.

As with everything else, the church could not resist poking their noses in. However, their usual interference did bring about positive changes in the level of entertainment on the island. During the early nineties, the Church of Cyprus created Cyprus’ second TV channel: ‘O Logos’ [The word]. Despite heavy censorship in films, they quickly overtook their semi-government rival.

CyBC did not take this sitting down and a year later they came out with CyBC 2 with the aim of luring housewives to the box by airing endless South American dramas and American soaps.

Cyprus ANT-1 soon followed, largely due to the attraction the Cypriot market provided for Greek television channel owners. Then came Sigma and, all of a sudden we had five free stations in Cyprus.

While Logos was bought by another Greek station, MEGA, local channels also came into the fore. Omega Television, a station catering for the Paphos community, has recently announced that it is revamping the station. Omega will expand their English language shows to include live English language news on weekday evenings at 8 pm, award winning-documentaries, blockbuster family movies, well-known series and local interest shows. Omega Television will also continue to broadcast Greek language programmes, including the news, sports, politics, films and game shows. Officials working for Omega Television have said that the reason for these changes is to “reflect the tastes and preferences of the Paphos community with a varied programming schedule”.

Back to pay TV. The situation then changed for good when LTV became the first Pay-TV service in Cyprus. Alfa TV, with whom Lumiere TV has a programming agreement, has remained in business due to keeping the rights for local sport – most importantly horseracing- as well as a number of European football leagues.

But pay-TV has moved on from the monopoly that LTV had enjoyed in the first few years after it was launched in 1993. The Cyprus Electricity Board (EAC) popped up with Cablenet and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) came up with MiVision as well as Athina Sat, launched in May 2005 and is the first Cypriot-owned DTH satellite provider in Cyprus. It is one of two satellite platforms, the other being NOVA Cyprus.

In the end, everything is relative and depends largely on individual personal preference, how much you need to cough up and of course, if it’s worth it. Here is what’s on offer up to now.
