LARGE supermarket chains are charging higher prices in different towns for the same products, an islandwide government price survey revealed yesterday.
The Greek-language survey shows Debenhams is charging Nicosia customers £6.75 per kilo for Christis halloumi – £1.25 more than the £5.50 per kilo price tag in Limassol and Larnaca. In Paphos they charge 80 cents more per kilo for the same halloumi.
A litre of milk costs more at Carrefour in Limassol (65 cents) than it does in Nicosia,, Paphos or Larnaca, where it is 60 cents,
Carrfour is also charging Nicosians 97 cents for the same yoghourt on sale at their outlet in Limassol for 83 cents and in Larnaca for 81.
The supermarket does the same with Austrian Edam, charging £2.68 in Paphos, £2.62 in Limassol and £2.53 in Nicosia.
The Ministry’s 24-page catalogue covers 34 types and brands of milk, cheese and yoghourt products, 24 different breads and other bakery items, and 11 cuts of meat. Prices at the main supermarkets and local supermarkets in all towns were also listed in euros.
The Consumer Protection Service of the Ministry said in a statement that it issued the catalogue to assure the public, concerned about recent price hikes, that it was monitoring the situation.
